YouTube Captions or Subtitles Not Working?

The most common reasons captions don't show up, quick fixes to try first, and a way to skip the player entirely.

Why captions stop working

Before anything complicated, these cover most cases - roughly in order of how often they're actually the problem:

  • The CC (captions) button wasn't turned on, or got reset - the single most common cause. Look for the CC icon in the player controls and click it on.
  • The video was just uploaded and auto-captions haven't finished processing yet - this can take a few minutes on very recent uploads.
  • The uploader turned captions off for this specific video - if so, there's nothing to turn on.
  • A cached page or a browser extension (ad blockers and some privacy tools included) is blocking the captions track from loading.
  • The video or its captions aren't available in your country - set by the uploader, not something you can toggle around.
  • A slow or unstable connection - captions load as a separate track from the video itself, so a shaky connection can time out just the captions while the video plays fine.

Try these first

  1. 1Click the CC icon in the player controls (bottom right) - if it's grey or crossed out, that's usually it.
  2. 2Reload the page with a hard refresh (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + R) - clears a stuck captions track.
  3. 3Try a different browser or a private/incognito window - rules out a browser extension interfering.

Why is the CC button greyed out?
