YouTube Captions or Subtitles Not Working?
The most common reasons captions don't show up, quick fixes to try first, and a way to skip the player entirely.
Why captions stop working
Before anything complicated, these cover most cases - roughly in order of how often they're actually the problem:
- The CC (captions) button wasn't turned on, or got reset - the single most common cause. Look for the CC icon in the player controls and click it on.
- The video was just uploaded and auto-captions haven't finished processing yet - this can take a few minutes on very recent uploads.
- The uploader turned captions off for this specific video - if so, there's nothing to turn on.
- A cached page or a browser extension (ad blockers and some privacy tools included) is blocking the captions track from loading.
- The video or its captions aren't available in your country - set by the uploader, not something you can toggle around.
- A slow or unstable connection - captions load as a separate track from the video itself, so a shaky connection can time out just the captions while the video plays fine.
Try these first
- 1Click the CC icon in the player controls (bottom right) - if it's grey or crossed out, that's usually it.
- 2Reload the page with a hard refresh (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + R) - clears a stuck captions track.
- 3Try a different browser or a private/incognito window - rules out a browser extension interfering.
- 4Test with a different video - if captions work there, the issue is specific to the first video (likely disabled or region-locked), not your browser.
Skip the player - just read the transcript
If you just need the words, not the video, paste the URL and get the full transcript as text - no CC button, no waiting for auto-captions, no browser extension conflicts to rule out.

Why is the CC button greyed out?
Usually means no captions exist for that video yet - either the uploader didn't add any and YouTube hasn't finished auto-generating them, or the uploader disabled captions entirely.
Why do captions show for some videos but not others?
Captions are a per-video setting controlled by the uploader - some add manual captions, some rely on auto-generated ones, and some turn captions off completely. It isn't a global YouTube feature you can force on.
Why did captions stop working after they worked before?
Usually a stuck cache or a temporary connection hiccup - a hard refresh or reopening the video fixes most of these. If it only happens on one specific video, the uploader may have changed its caption settings since.
Do I need an account to see captions?
No - captions are a public player feature and don't require signing in. If you're being asked to sign in, that's unrelated to captions specifically.
Is there a way to get captions as text instead of on the video?
Yes - paste the video's URL into our free tool and you'll get the transcript as plain text immediately, without needing the in-player captions to work at all.
